  • The old town of Harar is lined with shops of all sorts built into the walls of the city like the bodega you see here. The shopkeeper seems to be in a losing battle against lethargy.

  • There are five gates from which every body and every thing moves in and out if in this ancient, walled city. No, I’m not talking about Jerusalem, I’m referring to Harar in Eastern Ethiopia. Similar to Jerusalem are the ancient walls and gates, of course, as it’s status within a major religion as a sacred city. In this case, Islam. Yet another anomaly folded into the fabric of Ethiopia. An ancient, holy, MUSLIM city thriving within a country that claims to be the oldest Orthodox Christian country in the world. <br />
Here we see locals spilling out of Shoa Gate into the Shoa Or ‘Christian’ Market.

  • One thing that never ceases to amaze me when I am working in the developing world is people’s propensity for making due with what they have by finding multiple uses for simple, everyday objects. This girl in the ancient walled city of Harar, Ethiopia whimsically and I must say beautifully illustrated that for me with her use of an old pot lid as a hat.

  • Ethiopian tourists stop for group photo in front of Harar's, Ras Makonnen Equestrian Statue.  Ras Makonnen was Emperor Menelik's cousin and was appointed first ruler of Harar after the emperor's occupation of the city. Ras Makonnen was also the father of the Emperor Haile Selassie.

  • As there are no automobiles inside the ancient wall, burros are the preferred work truck. This woman runs a firewood delivery service with her two burros. I crossed paths with having just completed their morning rounds.

  • I saw this girl sitting on the giant roots of this old tree and how her bright yellow hijab leaped out of the background. What’s more, it was the perfect complimentary color to the traditional green stove along the wall behind her. After some initial reluctance, she finally decided to let me make a portrait of her and her favorite place.

  • This is the ‘Ge Gar’ (Reception Room) of a traditional Harari House I stayed in for a week. The ‘nadaba’ (raised platforms for sitting) have five different levels and is traditionally hierarchal. As a guest, the family granted me access to all levels save the highest one.

  • I walked past this butcher shop many times, struggling to find the composition or the mood that I was after. One afternoon as I was trying to suss out a scene, this lady walked up to the window and I was immediately struck by her dress and how perfectly it fit the scene.
