• One thing that never ceases to amaze me when I am working in the developing world is people’s propensity for making due with what they have by finding multiple uses for simple, everyday objects. This girl in the ancient walled city of Harar, Ethiopia whimsically and I must say beautifully illustrated that for me with her use of an old pot lid as a hat.

 • There are five gates from which every body and every thing moves in and out if in this ancient, walled city. No, I’m not talking about Jerusalem, I’m referring to Harar in Eastern Ethiopia. Similar to Jerusalem are the ancient walls and gates, of course, as it’s status within a major religion as a sacred city. In this case, Islam. Yet another anomaly folded into the fabric of Ethiopia. An ancient, holy, MUSLIM city thriving within a country that claims to be the oldest Orthodox Christian country in the world.
Here we see locals spilling out of Shoa Gate into the Shoa Or ‘Christian’ Market.

 • This gentleman is the orthodox high priest of the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity. Upon finishing an outdoor mass he approached me and asked if I wanted to go inside to see crypts of Haile Selassie a.k.a. Ras Tafari and his wife which are kept inside, adjacent to the vestibule. He must have thought I was with Nat Geo or something as apparently they usually charge a ‘museum’ fee for that. I’m sure it’s intended to not only, well, raise money for the church, but also as a means to restrict the crowds and prevent the church from becoming a scene like that at Mao Zedong’s mausoleum. At any rate, I took him up on the offer and moments later found myself standing over the auxumite granite tombs of Emperor Haile Salassie (The Holy One), his wife Empress Menen Asfaw and other family members. I took in the significance of the moment. Not so much out of respect for his status as a leader, but more so from being the huge fan of reggae music that I am. I mean I’ve been hearing about this guy from Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Jimmy Cliff, Toots and all of my other favorite rasta’s my whole life! The least I could do is bow my head for the inspiration he gave those fellas, right?
As he was escorting me out, I thanked him quietly yet profusely and asked him if I could make a portrait to remember him by to which he gave an approving nod. I and I left that church feelin’ irie I for the rest of the day!

 • Unlike hijabs (head and/or neck scarves worn by muslim women) in Middle-Eastern countries, the women in this tiny muslim enclave in Ethiopia wear vibrant colors just like their non-muslim counterparts across the continent.

 • Odds are, if someone asked you to name the top five most famous beaches in the world, two names near the top of the list would be Copacabana and Ipanema. Justifiably so. After all, Copacabana is credited as being the birthplace of the bikini and Ipanema, well, who can’t at least hum the chorus to the Jobim/Morais masterpiece, “The Girl From Ipanema" that single-handedly put Bossa Nova on the world map of musical genres? What’s really amazing is that both of these beaches are in the same city! Indeed, this could only occur in the hedonistic beach culture of Rio de Janeiro.
With an estimated population near ten million people, Rio has most of the things that go along with a city of that size anywhere in in the world, i.e. traffic, etc. However, two things that really set Rio apart from any other urban metropolis are it’s stunning geographic beauty and the “Cariocas" (Residents of Rio) belief that leisure time at the beach is a birthright. Wanting to illustrate this uniqueness I headed down to Arpoador, which is the rocky outcropping that separatesIpanema and Copacabana. This turned out to be a good choice because not only did it afford me this beautiful view looking all the way down Ipanema Beach to it’s spectacular mountainous end, it also had plenty of locals engaging in their favorite seaside activities. Whether it was working out to maintain their “body beautiful”, surfing or in the case of these four men, fishing right off the rocks into the ocean. Facing West in the late afternoon gave me the opportunity to silhouette the men, thus turning them into the representative “everyman” and the perfect composition to illustrate the lifestyle of this unique mega-city.
