A spaza, which means 'hidden' in Zulu, is a small shop often run out of or adjacent to people's home. This started during the apartheid era when there were restrictions placed on black people running businesses. Today it simply makes economic sense. They usually carry a surprising variety of goods from fresh produce to laundry detergent and of course, cigarettes.
